What Is Supplemental Security Income (SSI)?

At The Disability Guys Michael Kalmus Attorney At Law, we can help you understand if your application qualifies for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI). We can also help you apply for benefits. And we can explain how the hearing process works.

How Can Supplemental Security Income Help You?

SSI is a need-based program. In order to qualify, you need to be considered low-income. You also need to have limited income and resources. If you meet SSI's income limits, you may qualify for benefits even if you do not qualify for SSD based on your earnings history.

Social Security Disability Insurance in NJ

The Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) program is separate from the Supplemental Security Income program. Both programs function like insurance programs. However, the SSDI program does not provide benefits to people who are disabled but do not meet the requirements of the SSI program.

A New Jersey Social Security disability attorney should be familiar with the process of handling Social Security Disability claims in NJ. He or she should know how to navigate the state agency that processes the application. These lawyers also need to have offices in New Jersey.

SSDI benefits can greatly affect people's lives. We know how important your case is because we've helped many clients get SSDI benefits. Whether you're applying for SSDI or an appeal of a denial, we can help.

Social Security Disability vs Supplemental Security Income

Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), and Social Security Retirement Benefits (SSR) are three different types of government programs. SSI is designed to help people who are disabled, blind or age 65 or older. People who are eligible for SSDI may also qualify for SSD benefits. Applications for SSI are also applications for SSD benefits. The application for SSI is administered by the Social Security Administration.

SSI benefits are financed entirely by the US government. There is no requirement that you pay into the system to receive these benefits. You do not need to be employed to receive them. SSI benefits are not taxed as income.

Supplemental Security Income SSI

Supplemental Security Income (SSI), also known as Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), is a federal monthly financial assistance program designed for people who are disabled but do NOT meet the work requirements to get regular Social Security retirement benefits. SSI benefits may be paid to adults and children who are blind, deaf, or have a mental disability. You must have little or NO income and few available resources to qualify for SSI benefits.

Your total assets must be less than $2000 if you're single, or less than 3000 if you're married. But the SSA won't count the value of your house, car, or any other possessions. You'll need to prove that your total assets are below those limits.

A person who receives Social Security payments must be 65 years old or older. He/she may not work while receiving these payments. If he/she does work, then he/she must earn less than $2,000 per month. This amount is called the earnings limit. For example, if an individual earns more than this amount, then he/she will lose some of the money received from Social Security.

Social Security Disability

If you're disabled and unable to work, you may qualify for Social Security disability benefits. You'll need to prove your disability by providing medical evidence. A doctor who specializes in disabilities will examine you and decide if you're eligible. Then, an attorney will review your claim and make sure you get the money you deserve.

When applying for social security benefits, make sure your lawyer is experienced and knowledgeable about the process. Errors or admissions may cause delays or denials of your application.
